*2. Program Summary*
This 24-month program focuses on promoting data privacy and protection policies consistent with democratic values and the safeguarding of human rights in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam). Through virtual and in-person trainings and meetings, ABA ROLI and its partners will raise practicing lawyers’ and civil society actors’ *understanding and awareness of digital privacy rights* requirements and risks, especially for marginalized and vulnerable communities. Support *pro bono legal assistance for victims of privacy rights violations* (by both state and non-state actors), prioritizing victims from marginalized and vulnerable communities. Foster *regional multi-sector coalitions of privacy advocates* to promote stronger protections of online privacy and engage experts from Asia in global discourse on privacy rights. By focusing broadly on the intersection of law and technology and specifically building technical acumen of lawyers and legal acumen of CSOs, _Defending Data Privacy_ complements existing programs focused on freedom of expression and association online. Furthermore, focusing on Southeast Asia, where internet use is the highest globally, _Defending Data Privacy_ will expand and diversify the Eurocentric conversations on digital privacy and provide access to justice through legal support when SEA users’ privacy rights are violated.

*3.About the Rule of Law Initiative:* ROLI is the largest of the ABA’s 4,000 sections; we take our mandate from the ABA’s 4th pillar, supporting the rule of law at home and abroad. With offices in more than 30 countries and program activities in nearly 100, our activities have a very broad range, but always seeking to support the rule of law and human rights largely at the systemic or institutional level.
