@sylin @au, hi! After the session about vTaiwan and g0v hosted by @patcon @lizbarry and @itsmisscs in RightsCon2018, @joeywdoyle from Toronto would like to followup and find out more. Could you give him an overview of the process you guys used involving pol.is to craft policy? or any reading materials or interview transcription?

better public discourse through artificial intelligence → more informed public servants → better laws

These are some links to start with, a site, a video and a blogpost.
@joeywdoyle, You are welcome to join #vtaiwan channel, too. Feel free to shoot questions there.
This is excellent, thank you! Very amazing what you all are doing - I have lots to learn. I joined #vtaiwan and will ask questions as they arise (though will be travelling soon so likely not for a while)

couple other channels:
- in this slack, there's #vnetwork and #vnyc where ppl are working to transpose vtaiwan process to western contexts :slightly_smiling_face:
- there's a #vnetwork-toronto channel in the Civic Tech Toronto slack (http://slack.civictech.ca/), where folks are scheming how to bring the process to Toronto. Civic Tech Toronto hosts weekly hacknights -- this month at Sidewalk Labs new office on lakeshore. vNetwork Toronto isn't yet doing a pitch, but we're normally there prepping. lemme know if you're interested in learning more :slightly_smiling_face: also: meetup.com/Civic-Tech-Toronto

I have a SayIt related question (maybe @au knows?) — are your transcripts auto-generated or all hand transcribed? There’s so much material there!!
It’s a mixture of speech recognition and manual editing. Currently mostly manual, but we’re actively looking into solutions.
Thanks! Wow. 🙀
@casey also, this used to be a way to generate transcripts from simple collab hackpad.tw docs that followed a certain format (not sure if it's still being used in tw):
http://pad.archive.tw/
i'll put together a quick demo of the parts so you can test easily 🙂
and here's the imported version (you can create your own free instance of sayit on that website for testing): https://vkanata.sayit.mysociety.org/2016-11-16-city-hall-task-force-meeting-1
thanks so much!

i often fear that the way 18F and USDS operate (and the civic tech community’s insistence on kinda putting us on pedestals) push the US civic tech community towards government tech rather than human services and strengthening democratic institutions
canadian_aaron 2018-06-26 23:51:38
This is something quite unusual to the north American civic tech community.
yeah, there's something there. i associate it mostly with the order of operations -- ie. code for america, whose theory of change is so strongly tied to working closely with gov, being the catalyst for starting many of the local communities (chi hack night not included)
