:earth_africa: Just launched: a tool to show how climate impacts our pensions. At Open Culture Foundation, we built an open-source Pension Calculator for the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) to highlight why fossil fuel divestment matters.
---
Last Thursday, the campaign site I’ve been working on for the past few weeks officially went live: the Pension Calculator.
The tool helps people see how much of their pension could be at risk by 2050 if Taiwan’s public funds fail to adopt a fossil-fuel divestment plan and disclose their climate investment strategies.
For example: a 20-year-old earning USD 1,000 per month today could see their pension shrink by 32% by 2050—a potential loss of USD 17,000.
Many private financial institutions have already begun to divest, but public funds still lag behind. But the trend for divestment from the petrochemical industry could not be clearer.
Formosa Plastics Group, Taiwan’s largest petrochemical conglomerate and a typical constituent stock in local funds, has lost two-thirds of its value since Q3 2021—in sharp contrast to the explosive growth of Taiwan’s high-tech and semiconductor industries.
With the support of LUSH, this campaign and calculator are now being shown in all their stores across Taiwan. This helps more people understand the pension risks and act together to urge the government to move forward.
