是說這週本來我有說我可以host，想要討論開發的方向，想讓大家分享使用過的deliberation tools的心得，然後brainstorm一下以vTaiwan今年的方向來說，會需要什麼requirements，不知道大家有沒有興趣討論呢！但是考慮到Peter星期三在飛機上，想問大家如果延一天同時間星期四會不會有空呢？

我覺得在討論「有哪些AI 工具/應用 對於民主有幫助」的時候，我們要先想想這樣的論述和 vTaiwan 的價值有沒有一致。許多 AI 公司，尤其是 OpenAI，砸重本帶起「AI 有助於民主發展」這種論述，然而 OpenAI 本身 AI 的開發方式就既不民主又不透明，和許多開源可供檢驗的討論工具如 Polis 完全相反。所以我覺得 vTaiwan 在回答的時候可以避免落入別人設計好的議題，而是從民主的角度出發，指出 AI 真的要對民主有幫助的話本身需要有哪些前提，尤其是 AI 的開發方式要更民主，而不是掌握在少數 AI 專家的手中

Dear vTaiwan community,
My name is Phoebe and I am a Research Fellow and PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, Australia.
I hope you don’t mind me reaching out to this email – my colleague Flynn Devine told me that Peter said this would be the best way to get in touch.
I am writing as someone who has been deeply inspired for many years now by the innovations in digital democracy that so many people within Taiwan have collectively pioneered – the vTaiwan story has very much shaped the trajectory of my own work.
I hope to visit Taiwan later this year, and am writing to see if there might be any opportunities to connect with and learn from those involved in these processes, to inform the work we are doing in Australia.
For some context: my research career started out with a focus on community wellbeing in contexts of disaster recovery and climate change, and through that I became convinced of the importance of exploring new approaches to collective decision making around contentious issues, seeing how corrosive the existing processes often were (e.g. decisions by governments in top-down fashion, or by small groups of over-stretched community members).
So, heavily inspired by vTaiwan and related initiatives, I have spent the past few years exploring the role that innovations in democracy and civic technologies may be able to play in helping our communities collaboratively progress through these issues and create new possibilities for collective flourishing.
I have so far conducted two action-research case studies using Polis – one the issue of staff air travel emissions at a university, and the other on the issue of extreme heat adaptation within a local government area in partnership with a council in Melbourne – with a further project planned in a highly hazard-prone rural community in late 2024/early 2025.
To inform the next steps in our work, I am very curious to learn more about the processes used by the vTaiwan community and in other related initiatives. I have been closely following various initiatives based on what is online, but I imagine there would be much more insight to be soaked up through conversation if I visited. I hope to visit Taiwan later this year, and am writing to see if there might be any opportunities to connect with and learn from those involved in these processes, to inform the work we are doing in Australia.
For some context: my research career started out with a focus on community wellbeing in contexts of disaster recovery and climate change, and through that I became convinced of the importance of exploring new approaches to collective decision making around contentious issues, seeing how corrosive the existing processes often were (e.g. decisions by governments in top-down fashion, or by small groups of over-stretched community members).
So, heavily inspired by vTaiwan and related initiatives, I have spent the past few years exploring the role that innovations in democracy and civic technologies may be able to play in helping our communities collaboratively progress through these issues and create new possibilities for collective flourishing.
I have so far conducted two action-research case studies using Polis – one the issue of staff air travel emissions at a university, and the other on the issue of extreme heat adaptation within a local government area in partnership with a council in Melbourne – with a further project planned in a highly hazard-prone rural community in late 2024/early 2025.
To inform the next steps in our work, I am very curious to learn more about the processes used by the vTaiwan community and in other related initiatives. I have been closely following various initiatives based on what is online, but I imagine there would be much more insight to be soaked up through conversation if I visited.
